New Voices: Lighthouse Community School, Fall, 2018

Posted on August 28, 2018

This fall, English students at Lighthouse Community School will produce videos on significant school, personal or community issues of their own choosing. Students will master the technical and other logistical issues involved with film production from start to finish.

Final student films will be presented to the school community as well as to the larger community in a public forum near the school. Film topics range from a music video for a song composed, produced and recorded by one student, the importance of sports and basketball, thoughts about social media and boxing. Students have shot footage which includes interviews of each other, faculty and staff and community members. They have mastered skills of shooting in both artificial and natural lighting conditions, writing questions and preparing for interviews and editing their videos on Adobe Premiere.

Check out final student videos below.

Jiaire created a video consisting of interviews and action shots to show how important basketball is for him. He explains his motivation for making a film about his passion for basketball.

I grew up in Madisonville and I love basketball. I play for my uncle’s team. Every chance I get to play, I put my life on the line to be part of it. When I’m on the court playing basketball, I feel almost like I’m in space.
I didn’t get good at basketball until I started practicing and learned different moves. I watched players and games to learn. I learned behind the back dribbling by watching other people do it and by practicing. It took me a minute. I did what you should do to get good at anything, I practiced it to get better. Now it feels easy.
My inspiration is Steph Curry who plays for the Golden State Warriors. I like his game, what really got me about his game was how he started just as a regular player to becoming an NBA all star. He’s really good at my favorite move, behind the back dribbling.

Aleyah’s video highlights her passion for boxing and dancing.

Quentavion’s video asks some hard questions about the meaning of life.

Nathan’s video looks into the good and bad aspects of social media.

JaShawn’s video explores why school is important to students and teachers.

Sebastian’s video provides thoughts about student fashion at Lighthouse Community School.
