New Voices to Exhibit at the Freedom Center, November 2014

Posted February 13 2014

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will show work from New Voices students from SCPA and residents of Joseph House during the 2014 Fotofocus festival in October, 2014. Opening September 20 through December 13.

Fotofocus is a biennial festival of photography which will hold its second festival in the fall of 2014. Over 50 Cincinnati venues including Prairie will be participating in this year’s festival.

Students from SCPA worked in small groups with partners from Joseph House, an agency which supports veterans in dependent situations, to create work work which will be presented at the 2014 FotoFocus exhibition. During the fall of 2013, these groups met on a weekly basis to photograph and reflect upon sites of historic interest in Over-the-Rhine. Students and residents went on six photo shoots and worked together to record the residents’ personal narratives and the events which led them to the Joseph House. These narratives were then illustrated with photographs by all participants and were formatted into short “graphic novels”.

The New Voices exhibition at the Freedom Center will present excerpts from these graphic novels as a series of images which reflect their shared experiences.
