New Voices: Sycamore High School and Recovery Hotel, Spring, 2019

Sycamore High School students and participants in programming at Recovery Hotel interpret Over-the-Rhine in images and words.

Throughout the spring of 2019, Sycamore High School students met on a weekly basis with former and current residents of Recovery Hotel, a program of Over-the-Rhine Community Housing which helps individuals overcome substance dependency. The combined group found common ground in the stories they shared, the community issues they discussed and their hopes and dreams for the future. The group also produced over 5,000 images of various sites around Recovery Hotel’s Over-the-Rhine facility including City Hall, Plum Street Temple, Rothenberg Rooftop Garden and Washington Park. A final display of the group’s work is permanently installed in the Recovery Hotel lobby.

Thomas: The program had two parts for me.  It gave me experience in photography and also the experience of talking to a younger generation one on one.  In the past, when I was overcoming drug addiction, I was trying to replace old bad habits with new good habits.  When I started doing New Voices, it was new every time and a challenge every meeting.  The challenges were great because I had never picked up a camera before then.
